The Plateau State Government has confirmed 22 deaths and 132 injuries from the collapsed school building in Jos, the capital of the state.
WikkiTimes earlier reported that at least 16 students were killed on Friday morning when a two-storey building at Saint Academy located in Busa-Buji area of Jos North local government.
Mr. Musa Ashoms, the Commissioner for Information said 22 people were confirmed dead and 132 sustained various degrees of injuries with six of them in critical condition.
Ashoms added that the injured are receiving treatment in various tertiary health facilities across the state, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in mortuaries.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a statement issued by Mr Gyang Bere, his Director of Press and Public Affairs, described the incident as a tragic and monumental loss to the state.
”This is a tragic, unfortunate, heart-wrenching and gloomy situation. We appreciate the timely intervention of the search and rescue team, as well as members of the public, who rushed to the school premises to assist in evacuating some of the surviving students and staff.
”I have directed the relevant government agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, to provide necessary support to survivors.
