US Embassy Raises Alert Ahead of Planned Pro-Nnamdi Kanu Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to its citizens ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, under the banner #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.

The Embassy warned that the protest, expected to take place at Eagle Square and the Central Business District, could result in traffic disruptions, roadblocks, and potential clashes between protesters and security forces.

The planned protest, spearheaded by human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, seeks the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since June 2021.

Sowore, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), described the protest as a “historic and peaceful demonstration” that would march toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 am,” he wrote.

In a statement published on its website Friday, the US Embassy advised American citizens to avoid the protest locations and limit their movement across Abuja on that day.

“The Embassy informs US citizens that the Free Nnamdi Kanu Now protest has called for peaceful demonstrations on Monday, October 20, in Abuja. There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protesters that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the statement read.

The Embassy also advised parents to keep children at home and urged domestic staff commuting from outside Abuja to stay away for safety reasons.

“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests,” it added.

Kanu, currently facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, was re-arrested in 2021 after being extradited from Kenya under controversial circumstances.

The Embassy further advised Americans in Nigeria to remain vigilant, monitor local news, and review personal security plans, including keeping communication devices charged in case of emergencies.

“Keep a low profile and be alert in public places such as shopping centres, places of worship, and entertainment venues,” the advisory concluded.
