The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe, has assured Veterinary Council of Nigeria partnership of his command to rid the state of quacks among veterinary doctors in the state.
Balarabe gave the assurance on Tuesday when a team of veterinary doctors, under the aegis of Anti-Quackery Committee of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, paid him courtesy visit in his office in Enugu.
“We will support you in your national assignment as it concerns Enugu State and its general environs,’’ he said.
The commissioner lauded the council for involving the police in its drive to clean up the veterinary practices in the whole country.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr Philip Ozoagu, told the commissioner that the committee was responsible for ensuring that premises where veterinary drugs, additives and feeds among others were sold, were duly registered with the council.
Ozoagu, who is the Director of Veterinary Services in Enugu State, further said that the committee inspected slaughter slabs and animal boarding houses.
“Our purpose here is to brief you on the activities of the Veterinary Practicing Premises Sub-Committee in Enugu state and to request for your support.
“We intend to embark on enforcement, soon, to rid Enugu state of quacks causing serious health hazard to the general public,’’ he said.
According to him, the Veterinary Practicing Premises Sub-Committee is under the Anti-Quackery Committee of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, a Federal Government agency, is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring wholesome veterinary practices in Nigeria, among other statutory responsibilities.
