In a bid to address growing public unrest, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a halt to ongoing nationwide protests, urging citizens to embrace dialogue as the path to resolving their grievances.
“I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, and other states, the destruction of public facilities, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops.” President Tinubu stated in his nationwide broadcast on Sunday. “I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence and destruction.”
“Under the circumstances, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity,” he said.
The President’s appeal comes amid a wave of protests across the country, with citizens voicing their concerns over a range of issues, including economic hardship, security challenges, and social injustices.
While acknowledging Nigerians’ right to peaceful protest, President Tinubu stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability, decrying that several public assets were vandalised by the hoodlums against the promises set by the protesters.
