The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa has said that the federal government will not condone continued building collapse in the country.
Dangiwa, while in a meeting with regulatory bodies in the building sector, said building collapse is unacceptable under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu-led administration, emphasizing that the government will not hesitate to prosecute anyone that failed to comply with standards in the sector.
The minister in a tweet via his verified X handle said he is committed to taking all necessary steps towards addressing the alarming recurrence of building collapses in the country.
“Building collapses result in the loss of lives and property, which is unacceptable under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President. As the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, I am committed to taking all necessary steps that would help towards addressing and curbing the alarming recurrence of building collapses in our country”.
“We must establish a system that ensures compliance with standards by all stakeholders in the building process, along with mechanisms to identify and prosecute those responsible for these failures”, he tweeted.
The minister said he has recently met with the leadership of regulatory bodies in the built environment to review some recommendations made by the Ministerial Committee on Building Collapse, which he recently established.
According to him, some of the recommendations include reconstitution of the National Building Code Advisory, reviewing the Acts establishing the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), the Town Planners Registration Council (TOPREC) and the implementation of punitive measures and sanctions for professional negligence among others.
