WikkiTimes Publisher, Police Spokesman, Others to Speak on Journalists’ Safety During 2023 Election

Haruna Mohammed Salisu, WikkiTimes co-publisher will today speak alongside others including Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, about journalists’ safety during the 2023 general elections.

Salisu is scheduled to speak during a Twitter space organised by Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ). The co-publisher was on Saturday, February 25, arrested at Duguri, the hometown of Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed, where he was covering the presidential and parliamentary polls.

WikkiTimes would later discover that Salisu was arrested on the order of the governor as his security details were the ones who arrested him and subsequently took him to a detention facility at Bauchi Police Headquarters.

Apart from the media cycle, other speakers were drawn from civil society organisations. They include; Obioma Okwonkwo, Legal Officer for Media Right Agenda (MRA), Chris Isiguzo, National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Melody Akinjiyan, Programme Officer, International Press Centre (IPC) and Karina Igonikan, a reporter with BBC Pidgin Service.

The Twitter space scheduled for 11 am today will be moderated by Busola Ajibola, Deputy Director, Centre for Journalism and Innovative Development (CJID).

This virtual engagement themed ‘How safe were journalists during 2023 elections? will provide a healthy platform for assessing the 2023 general elections, learning from experience sharing; and proffering solutions for improving the safety of journalists says WSCIJ in a Twitter post.
