Women in Bauchi describe myths on CBS as denial to healthcare

Some Child Birth Spacing (CBS) clients in Bauchi have described myths and misconception in some section of the public, on the use of any method for spacing births, as an act of mischief.

They argued that such act could also deny women of reproductive age, healthcare and economic stability in the state.

The women made the disclosure during a facility visit to some Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) on Thursday in Bauchi by, members of Bauchi Public Media Health Network.

Mrs Deborah Kefas, a mother of three children, said that the misconceptions were part of ignorance.

“I have been having issues with the kind of services I selected for one year and I kept coming to the facility.

“I have now decided to opt out for another one, but not to begin to have negative perception on CBS.

“So if at all a woman experiences issues, advisably go back because the service providers are available to attend to you,” she said.

Mrs Hauwa Yusuf, a mother of three, explained that men have succeeded in shifting their responsibilities to mothers, not minding the economic strength of their spouses.

“Husbands are no longer interested in many children, so it is better you visit CBS unit and take care of yourself.

“They believe the more you save money, the more you over take their positions, so, they deliberately refuse to provide for the children.

“As a mother of three, I thank God and it is okay for me, so that, even without his support, my children will have a good life,” she said.

Mrs Zulai Usman, a mother of 11, narrated that due to the large number of children at 40 years, she has developed advocacy messages to women of reproductive age.

“No misleading information is worth denying CBS.

“Visit the clinic and get first hand information for a healthy lifestyle, were some of the messages,” she said.

In her contribution, the health officer in charge of CBS unit, Bayan Fada PHC, Mrs Hadiza Maikudi said that the facility recorded not fewer than 600 clients a month.

She said the challenge was the fear of running out of stock, as couples were visiting the clinics often.
