Women, Youths Protest Killing of 5 in Benue

Women and youth from the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State have blocked a part of Lafia-Makurdi Highway to protest the the killings of five locals in Ngban community.

The assailants attacked the community on Thursday night.

The Guma LGA Security Adviser, Christopher Waku, confirmed the attack to journalists in Makurdi.

“Our women have trooped out to the Makurdi-Abuja federal highway since 5:00 am today (Friday) as you can hear from the background of the telephone conversation. Right now, they are singing emotional songs and no vehicle coming from either Abuja or Makurdi can pass through to either side.

“The women are protesting the murder of five people killed yesterday (Thursday) night and this morning (Friday),” he said.

He further confirmed the number, saying: “Three people were killed at Ngban yesterday night and two people were killed at Nyian this morning. The women have said that they are not going to leave the road until the governor comes and talks to them. I’m right now on the road where the women are protesting, waiting for Governor Hyacinth Alia.”

Locals who spoke to WikkiTimes noted that the aassailants invaded the community in two separate attacks where they killed two and three people on Thursday and Friday, respectively

They also confirmed that the assailants attacked the community while they were asleep at night

The police spokesperson for Benue Police Command, Cathrine Anene, confirmed the blockage of the road, saying: road “is open now”.

When asked about the number of casualties, she said there were no details about the figures yet.
