Staff of the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), handling for constructing the Wunti flyover bridge in Bauchi, took to the streets today to protest against deduction of their monthly salaries.
The protesters converged outside the temporary site of the firm along Jos Road, Wuntin Dada in Bauchi.
Speaking to our reporter, the secretary of the workers’ union, Saminu Baiko, expressed the workers’ frustration over the salary cuts, which have persisted for two consecutive months.
Baiko stated that the union had agreed with the firm to purchase safety equipment for its members, with the cost to be deducted from their monthly salaries. While the equipment was purchased for Seven thousand Naira, the firm has been deducting over forty thousand, Naira from each worker’s salary for the past two months.
He demanded an immediate refund of the excess deductions.
Addressing allegations that the firm had detained some workers, Baiko said he was unaware of any such incidents.
Reacting to the protest, the Public Relations Officer of CCECC in Bauchi, Alhaji Garba Lawal, confirmed the salary cuts, attributing them to technical issues in the salary disbursement system.
He urged the workers to be patient and resume their duties, assuring them that the issue would be resolved soon.
Lawal clarified that some workers were apprehended for possessing company property and the suspects are under custody while investigation is ongoing.
