The Yobe State Government has announced the closure of all primary and secondary schools in the state in preparation for the nationwide hardship protests scheduled for August 1, 2024.
According to a memo signed by Bukar M. Modu, Director of Schools Management at the State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, schools will be closed on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, instead of Friday, August 2, 2024, which marks the end of the academic session.
The memo explained that the closure was necessary due to the anticipated protests, and schools are set to resume on September 15, 2024.
State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Professor Abba Idriss Adam, confirmed the decision to Daily Trust. “While we can anticipate the start of these protests, we cannot predict their impact. To ensure the safety of our students, we have decided to close schools from July 31.
“With the academic session ending on August 2, we believe it’s prudent to keep students at home with their families during this uncertain time. This measure will provide peace of mind for both the students and their families, as some students may prefer to be with their parents and guardians.”
