Yobe State Government has started resettling flood victims that had lost their houses in devastating flood in the State.
Governor Mai Mala Buni has officially launched the relocation of the Kirikasamma community in Geidam Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe State.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Muhammad Goje, announced the development on his Facebook page, emphasising the government’s commitment to providing lasting solutions for displaced families.
“For years, 114 households—comprising over 500 individuals—displaced by flooding in Kirikasamma and neighboring communities, have been living temporarily in Geidam town, many in the New Mai Mala Housing Estate,” he said.
According to Goje, following comprehensive security assessments and a relocation intention survey, the state government is advancing plans for sustainable resettlement to allow these families to rebuild their lives.
The relocation process officially commenced with the distribution of relief materials and cash support to affected families by SEMA.
He added that the state government has allocated 8.53 hectares of land for shelter and farming to the displaced families to ensure a smooth transition, where ownership of the land is granted exclusively to beneficiaries on a non-transferable basis.
Goje noted that social amenities, including water facilities, upgraded school access, and nearby healthcare services, are being provided to support the new settlement.
The Executive Secretary emphasized that the relocation process has been facilitated through collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Geidam Local Government, traditional leaders, representatives of the Emir of Ngazargamu, and security agencies.
