Youth Council Demands Prosecution of FRSC Personnel Over Bauchi Accident, Fault Officials For Negligence

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Alkaleri Branch has in collaboration with Okada and Tricycle Riders Association demanded the Police to prosecute the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, personnel involved in an accident that killed two persons in Alkaleri local government area of Bauchi state.

The petitioners expressed dismay over the unsympathetic behaviours exhibited by the official of FRSC to the victims of the accident.

“Since after the incident, the victims were abandoned by FRSC with no one come from Abuja to commiserate with the families of the victims of the accident, even their treatment is financed by their relatives without Federal Government’s intervention to alleviate their suffering with the exception of little donation from the state sector and unit command which is not reasonable enough.

“In view of that, we are demanding for the proper prosecution of the principal suspect especially the driver of the FRSC vehicle who rammed into the innocent victims inside a shop in Alkaleri to a competent court of jurisdiction,” the petition read in part.

The faulted the Head of Alkaleri FRSC operational unit who according to NYCN was on board the vehicle when the accident occurred.

NYCN echoes for full compensation of the families of the deceased and those who sustained injuries.

“Three persons lost their lives – a woman together with her daughter and another woman again. And about 7 people sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident. I got a leg fracture.

“I was visited by FRSC Bauchi sector official together with that of the Alkaleri unit. They gave me N5000 and 15 measures of rice. It is said that others were given N5000 each as well but I’m not sure of that.

“They have not given me anything in relation to what I lost in the shop. Over one million property was lost at the shop. N5000 cannot pay even the fracture dresser or buy me even 2 chickens.

“It is said that the driver of the FRSC vehicle was behaving as if he was drunk as his mouth was foaming according to the people that came for the rescue. They said he pressed the vehicle throttle until when people came and pulled his leg up,” said Alhaji Bose, a shop owner who sustained fractured his leg, losing over one million naira as a result of the incident.

FRSC Bauchi Sector commander, Yusuf Abdullahi confirmed that two persons died during the accident, saying that they are still waiting for the response of the FRSC headquarters to compensate the families of the victims.

Abdullahi attributed the accident to a suspected mental disorder on the part of the driver whom FRSC employed over the last ten years after passing a supposedly mandatory medical examination.

“The driver was sick but we sent him for mental health test. He has been a driver for over ten years now,” Bauchi FRSC Sector Commanda claimed.
