Bauchi state government has unveiled plans to establish state traffic management authority to solve traffic related problems.
Briefing newsmen at the government house on Wednesday, the commissioner for works and housing, Alhaji Abdulkadir chikasoron Bauchi said that the state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Bala Mohammed deliberated and approved the establishment of Bauchi State Traffic Management Authority.
According to him, the aim of establishing the agency as approved by the state executive council is to regulate issues and matters relating to traffic management.
“As you may be aware, our dear sister states having confronted with issues of traffic management associated with insecurity, government usually take decisions that are going to address some of these issues and precisely, this is what in the wisdom of his Excellency under his leadership, the council deliberated and approved the establishment of this management authority.” The commissioner explained.
Chikasoro who said that the traffic management authority when established will be headed by a Director General and deputy comptrollers, added that it will create opportunity for hundreds of youths to be engaged as traffic cadets that will control the traffic problems in the state.
The commissioner while pointing out that the state traffic authority will respect the feelings of the citizenry, expressed dismay that every nook and cranny of the state have been turned to a motorpark, saying, when the traffic authority comes into being, it will ensure sanity in the traffic issues in the state.
On his part, the commissioner for finance, Alhaji Umar Adamu said that present administration has engaged a consultant that will help the State improved on the collection of taxes from the nonformal sector.
According to him, the state could no longer rely solely on taxes that are normally generated from pay as you earn’ from civil servants hence the need for government to expand its tentacles to the informal sector such as the commercial motorcycle, taxi and tricycle operators, traders in the markets among others to pay taxes to the government.
The finance commissioner said that the consultant will assist the state government in generating data by interfacing with the union leaders of the informal sectors and explaining to them about the importance of paying tax as citizens.
“When people expect that government should build hospitals, pay salaries, build roads and provide portable water, they have to also bear in their minds that they are expected to pay their taxes and water rates as and when due to enable the government serve them better.
