The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Kogi, has solicited the state government’s support to sensitise private school owners to register their schools with the commission.
Mrs Funmilayo Jimoh, the Public Relations Officer of CAC in Kogi, made the call during a sensitisation visit to the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, on Friday in Lokoja.
Jimoh appealed to the commissioner to help sensitise private school owners on the need to register their schools with the commission before giving them licences.
According to her, since private schools are profit-making establishments, there is need to get their names registered to have legal backing and access facility from banks for expansion.
She urged the schools to take advantage of the ongoing Business Incentive Strategy (BIS), an initiative of the Federal Government through CAC, aimed at making business registration easy and affordable.
“The cost of registering business under BIS is only N5,000 after an approved name at a fee of N500 only per name search, which started on Oct. 1 to end Dec. 31.
“We want the support of the ministry to ensure that private schools get their names resgistered with CAC before they get the ministry’s approval,” jimoh said.
In her remarks, the Commissioner assured the commission of the state government’s support, as the ministry was making all efforts to stop the operation of illegal schools across the state.
Osikoya said that the ministry had not granted licence to any school since she resumed office in January till date, saying most private schools in the state did not meet the minimum requirement for establishment.
She said that the ministry had conducted school census, acquired the necessary data, and had also opened a website to enable all schools in the state to upload their information.
“As soon as schools resume next year, we will be able to have the list of all private schools operating within the state. So, we are on the same page with the commission.
“The weak regulations have been well captured and taken care of in the 2019 State budget for the ministry.
“We want to see CAC as parthers in the fight against operations of illegal schools across the state,” she said.
