The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya chapter, has directed its members to join the indefinite strike declared by the Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions of Kaduna State (JUTIKS).
The strike, which commenced on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, follows the State Government’s failure to implement the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Education Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS) as agreed on August 18, 2025.
In a communiqué signed by its chairman, Comrade Christopher Nuhu Yerima, PhD, and secretary, Comrade Victor Yunana Bowman, COEASU accused the government of reneging on agreements and treating tertiary institution staff with “levity and contempt.”
“The government has bluntly refused to honour the agreement despite repeated assurances and commitments. It has approved 100% salary structures for certain categories of workers while staff of tertiary institutions remain on an obsolete and mutilated 80% salary structure for over 15 years,” the statement read.
The union alleged that the government is deliberately delaying the implementation of the agreed salary structure, noting that such tactics lend credence to fears it may not be effected until 2026.
COEASU said its members feel “undervalued and marginalized,” stressing that it no longer has trust in the government’s promises.
“We can no longer afford to be placated with empty promises and half-hearted measures. It’s time for decisive action,” the communiqué added.
The union urged members to remain united and resilient, insisting the strike will continue until the government fully approves and implements CONPCASS and CONTEDISS alongside other terms of the agreement.
