The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Niger State has disclosed that the death toll from the overwhelming flood in Mokwa LGA of the State has risen to 151 so far.
This, according to the agency, follows the recovery of 36 additional bodies two days after the incident that started on Thursday.
Speaking on Saturday, the Director General of SEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, said that 11 people had been injured and the flood displaced 3,018 others.
Arah further stated that 503 households across 265 houses in three communities were affected by the disaster. He added that two roads and two bridges were completely washed away.
WikkiTimes learnt that many residents of Mokwa town were swept away in their sleep on Thursday night after a heavy downpour that lasted several hours.
Experts and climate advocates have warned that climate change will continue to affect people, especially in communities with severe impacts of climate change.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that many states in the country would experience floods between August and October.
