The Emir of Ningi, Alhaji Haruna Yunusa Danyaya III, on Tuesday led the launch of a campaign to plant one million trees in Jimi town of Ningi LGA, Bauchi State.
The initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Green Legacy Foundation under the leadership of the Magajin Garin Kano, provided thousands of seedlings for the project.
In his address, the Emir described the effort as a major step towards combating desertification and protecting the environment. He directed district, village, and ward leaders across the emirate to ensure proper care and monitoring of the seedlings.
The Chairman of Ningi LG, Hon. Nasiru Zakarai, pledged the council’s support in safeguarding the environment against illegal logging and charcoal production. He noted that with this campaign, Ningi has become the second local government in Bauchi State to embark on such a large-scale tree-planting drive.
Similarly, the Chairman of Warji LGA, Hon. Aminu Barmini, urged Ningi LGA to consider engaging volunteers to nurture the trees through stipends. He commended the Magajin Garin Kano and the Green Legacy Foundation for their continued commitment to environmental protection.
Representing the Madakin Kano, Dr. Aminu Wada Fanda explained that the seedlings were provided by the foundation in collaboration with the Gaya Emirate Council. According to him, the intervention is part of a broader programme that has already reached 18 local government areas in Kano State.
The District Head of Ari, Alhaji Muhammad Kilishi Musa, also lauded the Emirate and the foundation for championing the campaign, describing it as a timely intervention against the growing threat of desert encroachment.
