The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal in Nigeria, marking the end of Ramadan and the commencement of the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
In a nationwide broadcast from Sokoto on Saturday, the revered spiritual leader confirmed the development, stating that credible reports of the moon’s sighting had been received from prominent Muslim leaders and organizations across the country.
“Today, the 29th day of March 2025, which corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan 1446AH, we have received verified reports from various Muslim leaders and organizations, including the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Dutse, the Emir of Argungun, the Emir of Daura, and the leadership of JIBWIS in Jos, confirming the sighting of the new moon,” the Sultan declared.
He further stated, “Based on these reports, tomorrow, March 30, 2025, will mark the 1st of Shawwal 1446AH and the day for the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.”
With this announcement, Muslims across Nigeria are set to join their counterparts worldwide in celebrating the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan. The Sultan urged all Muslims to use the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr as an opportunity to reflect on the spiritual lessons of Ramadan and to foster peace, unity, and compassion within their communities.
As customary, prayers and festivities are expected to take place across the country to mark the joyous occasion.
