The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Kashere (FUK) branch, has awarded scholarships to four indigent students as part of its commitment to supporting the education of less privileged undergraduates.
At a brief presentation ceremony held at the branch secretariat, the Chairperson, Comrade Shehu El-Rasheed, said the initiative was in line with the national body’s ongoing scholarship programme, which recently awarded two FUK students ₦200,000 each.
According to El-Rasheed, the local branch carefully selected four additional beneficiaries, including a visually impaired student, through a rigorous screening process that required a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.00 and proof of academic dedication. Each beneficiary will have half of their tuition fees paid by the union and will receive ₦50,000 in direct financial support.
“This scheme follows the tradition set by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi to assist brilliant but financially disadvantaged students,” El-Rasheed said. “We want to ensure that lack of resources does not stand in the way of academic excellence.”
He urged the recipients to channel the funds into meaningful academic needs and warned against frivolous spending.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Abubakar Muhammad Nasir, a 300-level Education Foundation student, thanked ASUU for the timely intervention, noting that it came as he was preparing for his teaching practice, which requires significant expenses for materials. “This is my first scholarship since I joined the university,” he said, pledging to make good use of the support.
He also called on other campus unions to introduce similar initiatives to ease the financial burden on students.
WikkiTimes reports that the national ASUU scholarship beneficiaries from FUK are Jamilu Shuaibu Zakariyya (Political Science) and Aluse Jude Aondongu (Entrepreneurship). The FUK branch scholarship recipients are Husaini Ibrahim (Entrepreneurship), Adamu Sani (Education Foundation), Adebayo Emmanuel (Economics and Development Studies), and Abubakar Muhammad Nasir (Education Foundation).
