President Bola Tinubu’s recent reshuffle of the nation’s military leadership has brought two distinguished officers to the forefront — Major General Waidi Shaibu, the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), and Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, who assumes office also as the new Chief of the Air Staff (CAS).
Both officers bring a blend of operational experience, academic excellence, and strategic foresight to their new commands.
Waidi Shaibu: Engineer, Strategist, and Combat Veteran
Born on December 18, 1971, in Olamaboro LGA of Kogi State, Major General Shaibu has built a career defined by discipline, learning, and operational experience.
He began his military journey at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as part of the 41 Regular Course in 1989. He was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps as a Second Lieutenant on September 17, 1994.
A trained engineer, Shaibu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the NDA, a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, and Master’s degrees in Public Administration (University of Calabar), Strategic Studies (University of Ibadan), and Security and Strategic Studies (National Defence University, Washington D.C., USA).
He is also an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where he completed the Leadership for the 21st Century: Chaos, Conflict and Courage programme, and holds an Advanced Executive Certificate in Applied Leadership and Strategy from the National Productivity Centre.
Over his three-decade career, Major General Shaibu has attended numerous military courses, including the Young Officers Course (Armour and Infantry), the Senior Staff Course at Jaji, and the Counter-Terrorism Fellows Programme at the National Defence University in Washington, D.C.
His appointments cut across command, instructional, and operational roles: Brigade Commander, 21 Special Armoured Brigade, Bama; Chief of Training (Army Headquarters); Director of Coordination, National Defence College; and Chief Instructor, Nigerian Army Armour School, among others.
Until he was appointed COAS, Shaibu served at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Abuja.
A veteran of multiple operations, including Operation HARMONY, LAFIYA DOLE, and HADIN KAI, he has earned several honours such as the Forces Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, Command Medal, and the Purple Heart Medal for counter-insurgency operations in the North East.
Away from the battlefield, Shaibu enjoys reading, early morning walks, and contemplation. He is married to Hajia Safiyyah Hassan, and the couple has two children, Haneef and Hafeeza.
Sunday Kelvin Aneke: Physicist and Aviator
Born on February 20, 1972, in Makurdi, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke hails from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. He is the son of retired Air Warrant Officer Sylvester Aneke and Mrs. Ngozi Aneke.
AVM Aneke began his education at the Army Children School, Kaduna, before proceeding to Government College, Kaduna, and later joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 40th Regular Combatant Course, graduating as a Pilot Officer in 1993.
Aneke’s academic path reflects his intellectual depth. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (University of Calabar), and Master’s degrees in International Affairs and Diplomacy (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria) and Political Economy and Development Studies (University of Abuja).
He also holds a Professional Certificate in Aviation Safety Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida, and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D.
An accomplished pilot with over 4,300 flight hours, Aneke is type-rated on aircraft including the Air Beetle 18, Dornier 228, Falcon 900, Gulfstream V, and Hawker 4000. His operational experience spans peacekeeping missions such as Operation Restore Hope in the Niger Delta and MONUC in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he served as Chief of Air Operations.
Over the years, Aneke has held key command positions including Director of Policy, Deputy Director of Operations, Command Operations Officer (Tactical Air Command), and Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy. Until his appointment as CAS, he was Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, Yenagoa, where he improved joint-force coordination and strategic air response capabilities.
He is decorated with several military honours, including the General Service Star (GSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), and Field Command Medal (FCM).
AVM Aneke is married to Mrs. Ngozi Enderline Aneke, and they have three sons — Chukwuebuka Kelvin, Ifeanyichukwu Brian, and Uchechukwu Jason.
Colleagues describe him as a visionary officer whose leadership blends intellectual rigour with operational precision — a combination expected to shape the Nigerian Air Force’s future in intelligence-driven and technology-based airpower.
