The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed grief over the death of Dotun Oladipo, publisher of The Eagle Online and former president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).
In a statement by its President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union described Mr Oladipo’s death as a major loss to the Nigerian journalism profession and the country.
The NUJ said Mr Oladipo was a distinguished journalist with decades of experience who contributed significantly to the development of journalism, particularly digital publishing, in Nigeria.
“His death is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and the country at large,” the union said.
The union said the death occurred at a time when journalism required courage, professionalism, integrity and commitment to democratic values.
It described the deceased as a journalist of “considerable experience and intellectual depth” who was committed to credible journalism, public accountability and the advancement of the media industry.
According to the NUJ, Mr Oladipo played a significant role in the growth of digital journalism through his leadership of The Eagle Online.
The union said he understood the changing media landscape and helped strengthen online journalism as a platform for informing the public and holding institutions accountable.
His tenure as president of GOCOP also demonstrated his commitment to professionalising online publishing and promoting responsible journalism, the union said.
The NUJ said Mr Oladipo believed the media could contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development.
“Beyond his professional achievements, Dotun was a colleague, mentor, advocate and friend to many within the media fraternity. His contributions will continue to resonate long after his passing,” the union said.
The union extended its condolences to Mr Oladipo’s family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, members of GOCOP, professional associates, friends and colleagues.
It urged the family to take solace in the legacy he left through his journalism and leadership.
“Dotun Oladipo’s voice may have been silenced, but his contributions to Nigerian journalism will continue to speak for him,” the union said.
The NUJ prayed for the repose of his soul and for strength for his family, colleagues and loved ones to bear the loss.
