Borno LG Still Under Boko Haram Control – Senator Cries Out

Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North, has decried that Boko Haram insurgents have taken total control of some areas in his constituency.

Monguno, while presenting a motion on the need to deploy adequate security personnel in some Borno LGAs, said despite relative peace in some parts of the state, there are communities still under the control of the terrorists.

The Senate Majority Whip said Guzama LGA has no civil authority in place nor military presence while Abadan and Marte LGAs need more security reinforcement as people are still under the captivity of Boko Haram.

“Guzamala Local Government is completely under tight control of Boko Haram insurgents, because of the fact that not any personnel can be found in the whole local government”.

“As a result, civil authority is lost and Boko Haram are effectively in control of that local government. They have imposed taxes and levies on the people and there is no security personnel to challenge them”, said Monguno.

He called for the establishment of military camps to restore peace in the affected areas as he expressed fear that if allowed to continue, the insurgents may extend their influence in the areas hitherto liberated by the forces.

“I am also worried that the absence of military personnel in the areas may embolden them to attempt to capture surrounding communities, thus ruining the previous efforts by the government to secure the state”, he added.
