Gunmen in the early hours of Sunday abducted several students from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in the Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident, which occurred around 4 a.m., was first reported by HumAngle, a conflict-focused media organisation that has closely tracked insecurity across Nigeria’s northern region.
According to the outlet, the attackers invaded the school before dawn, killing a staff member and injuring a security guard before escaping with an undetermined number of students.
Residents told HumAngle that the gunmen were still believed to be within the vicinity and urged security agencies and both state and federal authorities to act swiftly to prevent the assailants from moving deeper into forested escape routes.
Authorities in Kebbi State and federal security agencies have not yet released an official statement regarding the attack.
The abduction marks yet another assault on educational institutions in the northwest, a region that has seen repeated attacks by armed groups targeting schools for mass kidnappings.
Kebbi State suffered one of the most notorious attacks in June 2021, when armed men stormed the Federal Government College in Birnin Yauri, killing a police officer and kidnapping at least 80 students and five teachers.
Sunday’s abduction revives concerns over the safety of schools in rural communities and the continued vulnerability of students despite repeated government assurances of improved security.
