Banditry: Kano to Deploy Drones to Tackle Border Insecurity

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, says his administration will deploy drones and additional logistics to strengthen surveillance and rapid-response operations in communities along the Kano–Katsina border, where bandit attacks have intensified in recent months.

The governor disclosed this during an assessment visit on Tuesday to the bases of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Tsanyawa and Shanono LGAs, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The visit comes amid growing security concerns following coordinated bandit attacks that have led to the abduction of several residents and heightened fear in the affected communities.

Governor Yusuf urged residents to support security agencies with credible intelligence, noting that enhanced community cooperation remains critical to the success of ongoing operations.

He also revealed that President Bola Tinubu had responded positively after he briefed him on the deteriorating situation and requested federal support.

“We would secure drones and other logistics for surveillance and rapid response to protect inhabitants of the border areas,” the governor said, assuring that efforts to rescue kidnapped victims from Tsanyawa and Shanono were ongoing.

The governor also held engagements with JTF personnel, commending their efforts and pledging improved welfare for frontline troops.

“This type of insecurity in Kano State is something new; it is something alien that has just been observed in the state. The government is doing its best to address the situation with the cooperation of security agencies,” he added.

During the visit, Governor Yusuf met families of kidnapped victims and offered condolences to those who lost loved ones. Recent attacks in the area reportedly resulted in the abduction of between five and ten persons, while one woman was killed during an attack.
