Democracy Day: Tinubu Denies Tilting Nigeria to One-Party State

President Bola Tinubu has dismissed claims of plans to turn Nigeria into a one-party state under Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He argued that such a move “is politically malpracticed” and antithetical to democracy.

Addressing a joint session of the National Assembly to mark Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day, the President asserted, “At no time in the past, present, or future shall I view a one-party state as good for Nigeria.” 

Tinubu noted that he had a personal pledge to keep Nigeria a multi-party democracy, citing his history of resisting one-party dominance during military rule.

 He, however, contended that his party will always welcome defectors from opposition parties. He emphasized collaboration across party lines for national development. 

The President touted “encouraging” economic results from his reforms, saying that GDP grew to 3.4% in 2024, to 4.6% in Q4 of the same year. 

He added that Nigeria has added a fivefold increase in net foreign reserves and a stabilized exchange rate, while food inflation eased. 

President Tinubu also argued that over 100,000 Nigerians accessed consumer credit via CREDICORP, with a new July initiative targeting 400,000 youth beneficiaries. 

According to him, NELFUND is now expanding educational opportunities for young Nigerians. 

He stated that the Nationwide fibre optic cable rollout will bridge digital divides and boost connectivity for businesses and schools. 

Tinubu reported “intensified operations” against terrorists and criminals, crediting improved inter-agency coordination for safer highways.

He paid tribute to the armed forces “for their bravery in service of the nation,” describing their role as foundational to democratic progress.

he said his administration remains committed to translating macroeconomic gains into tangible improvements for ordinary citizens as Nigeria undergoes “structural and fundamental change toward a secure future.”
