Four Killed, One Rescued as Fire Guts House in Kano

The Kano State Fire Service said that a pre-dawn fire outbreak on Wednesday killed four family members in Kundila, Layin Baba Impossible, in Tarauni Local Government Area.

The incident occurred around 4:13 a.m. after the agency’s emergency unit received a distress call from one of its staff members, HFS Abba Datti.

Spokesperson of the service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said operatives from the headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, firefighters found a one-storey residential building measuring about 40 by 30 feet already engulfed in flames. The fire had spread across two bedrooms, a parlour, a toilet, and a kitchen.

According to Mr Abdullahi, five occupants were trapped in the blaze. They were identified as the father, Shodandi, 43; his wife, Rafi’a, 30; and their three children – Mardiya, 3; Yusira, one and a half; and Aminu, 12.

“Four of them were burnt to death, while a 12-year-old boy, Aminu Shodandi, was successfully rescued alive,” he said.

The service expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged residents to exercise caution with fire-related materials, especially during the harmattan season.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was triggered by a mosquito coil left burning in the parlour before the family went to bed.
