The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has rescheduled the local government elections to October 26.
KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi, disclosed the change of the date at a news conference on Friday in Kano.
The commission has earlier slated November 30 for the elections across the 44 local government areas.
Prof. Malumfashi said the decision to backdate the election timeline was made to comply with a Supreme Court ruling that grants local governments financial autonomy.
He added that all preparations by political parties campaigns will start from September 1, and end on 25th October.
“In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, the mutual agreement between States and Federal Governments and upon the expiration of October deadline on Local Government Financial Autonomy, the Commission is justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled Local Government Election to 26th October, 2024 as against 30th November, 2024.
“The Commission therefore, implored you the stakeholders to understand the compelling situation and give the Commission your most deserving support and cooperation,” he explained.
