Kano State Government has approved N700 million to settle the registration fee of students undergoing various undergraduate degree programmes at Bayero University, Kano.
At least 7,000 students would have their registration offset by the state government. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this Wednesday via his verified Facebook page.
“As part of our efforts to cushion the biting effects of our current economic reality; The Kano State Executive Council under my leadership has today approved the release of the sum of Seven Hundred Million Naira to settle tuition fees for 7000 students of Bayero University Kano (BUK).
“Further details of the initiative will be made available in due course,” the governor said.
Recall that WikkiTimes reports that BUK and other universities have increased their registration fees by as much as 200% in some cases.
The Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, justified the increment due to the high cost of running the university after removing the fuel subsidy amidst dwindling revenue.
The state commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Kofarmata, had earlier expressed displeasure with the hike in registration fees by the university.
Recall that WikkiTimes reports the Kano State government has stopped private secondary school proprietors in the state from raising school fees.
