Mambayya House formally known as the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies is a historic landmark in Kano that is a part of the Bayero University with the mandate devoted to conducting Research and Training in all aspects of Democratic Studies, Democratic Culture, Good Governance and Peaceful Coexistence.
Additionally, Mambayya House boast of Halls that individuals, organisations find suitable for seminar, conferences among others. However, this vital institution faces a long-standing water crisis that affects its functionality and often leaves visitor with not the best of experience.
During my recent visit, I found the center’s mosque and toilets still without a reliable water supply for visitors to ease themselves conveniently. The situation is worsened by the deplorable state of the toilets, which are dirty and unhygienic, creating an unpleasant and unhealthy environment for users.
Despite being a beehive of activities for scholars, researchers, and visitors, Mambayya House struggles to provide basic amenities that will ensure proper hygiene, with only one functional tap connected to a pump in the premises.

This inadequate water supply not only inconveniences users but also undermines the center’s mission of preserving the legacy of Malam Aminu Kano and fostering democratic values. Addressing this persistent challenge is crucial in ensuring the center remains a beacon of learning and engagement.

This short piece is to call the attention of the management of the centre or perhaps, the Bayero University Kano to take immediate action to resolve the water scarcity and restore hygienic conditions at Mambayya House. Fixing the problem will enhance the facility’s usability and uphold its significance as a historic and educational institution. Attached photographs from my visit highlight the urgency of this appeal, emphasizing the need for swift repairs to preserve this iconic landmark for future generations.
