Whenever a girl posts a thing on any social media platform you will see hundreds of men buzzing around the post, liking and loving it. In no time she gathers thousand likes which go into her head that she interprets as accolades. From good, constructive posts she descends to inanities. Still the teeming young men keep pushing the “like” button until she starts weighing her importance on activist or celeb scale. Then she is on her way to hell!
As an activist she is daily out there with men in meetings that she forgets her primary project in life. Being a scarf among turbans, she gets all appointments as the representative of Women folk. Then she is neither here nor there. She gets money and travel privilege in return of her “bravery” which is at the expense of destroying her feminine nature and prestige. At reaching the climax, she joins a political party to campaign for one politician or aspire to run for a seat. Either way, her doom is spelt!
As a celeb she joins film industry as a film star, make-up lady, lesbian partner, call girl for big names in politics or a whore mistress. Finally when she is no more shining she retires to start running a restaurant, still joining Alhajis to call girls and or, better, joining marriages. Sometimes she fights this and that Alhaji for refusing to pay after eating her food for too long or for maltreating her girl. This way her life ends in one Alhaji’s house, if she is lucky, who finds it difficult to continue romancing her outside wedlock with his age, respect and children.
So, I for one believe that girls on this platform should be advised to either be writers like Maryam Gatawa and Naseeba Babale (lol), running their personal lives away from the radar of public, mingling only when necessary with writers not politicians and celebs and doing their businesses like selling Gari and cosmetics, or end up as the former. Girls can surely be writers, readers and commenters on all issues being discussed but should not forget their culture and religion in doing so.
Mark my words, I do not condemn girls’ participation in activism and politics but just describe the life of activists among them based on experience. A girl can choose to be anything a man can be. However she needs to keep within her physical, psychological, religious and social limits. The glamour of life should not carry them away as no man wants such an exposed girl for a wife. Still, no parents want such a girl for a daughter!
