WIKKIDATA: Over N270 billion Disbursed to Northern Local Governments in 2024; See your State’s Share

A WikkiTimes review has shown that Northern States received the sum of N278 billion as local government allocation in the first two months of 2024.

Review shows that the sum of N29.8 billion was received by Kano state followed by Katsina state which received the sum of N22.1 billion.

The lowest amount for Northern states was obtained by Gombe, the sum of N8 billion was received by the state for the first two months of 2024.

Regional Distribution of Local Government Allocation

   For the Northwestern region of the country, Kaduna state received the highest amount of N16.5 billion followed by Kano which received  N15.9 billion.

The least amount for the Northwestern region was received by Jigawa state. Jigawa got the sum of N8 billion as local government allocation for the first two months of 2024.

In the North Central region, Niger received the highest value of local government allocation with the sum of N16.5 billion followed by Benue which received N15.9 billion.

In the Northeastern region, the sum of N17.7 billion was received by Borno, while Bauchi got N15.2 billion and Adamawa N13.4 billion.

Kano State budget to spend the sum of N50 million in 2024. This will mean that the sum of N29.8 billion received as local government allocation for the first two months of 2024 can build 596 schools.

The allocation for the first two months of 2024 is more than the total allocation for the ministry of water resources for the 2024 fiscal year in the state. Details show that the state plans to spend N5 billion for water resources in 2024, while already for the first two months of 2024, it received N7.7 billion already as allocation.

The total amount received in two months by Kaduna state (N18.2 billion) is more than its budgeted N3 billion for the local government affairs ministry in 2024.

Local government allocation management has always been an issue of controversy in the country.  The national union of local government employees had also accused states of poorly managing local government funds. It will be recalled that in 2020, the then President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order for financial autonomy for local governments.
