Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has signed into law a bill establishing the Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission (GITDEC), which aims to accelerate the state’s transition into a technology-driven economy.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Yahaya described the move as a strategic effort to position Gombe among Nigeria’s leading digital innovation hubs.
“This Commission will serve as the engine room for innovation, digital inclusion, and economic empowerment across our state,” the governor said.
According to the provisions of the new law, the Commission will be responsible for driving the state’s ICT policy, promoting digital literacy, enhancing e-governance, strengthening cybersecurity, and supporting startups to attract investments into the digital sector.
At the ceremony, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, presented a copy of the new law to the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa, to commence implementation.
Professor Garkuwa commended the initiative, describing it as a major milestone in Gombe’s digital transformation journey. He said the Commission would help bridge the gap between traditional governance and modern technology while opening opportunities for youth and entrepreneurs.
The signing of the GITDEC law follows Gombe’s growing partnerships with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Uniccon Group to strengthen digital infrastructure and innovation across the state.
