The Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the release of 20 medical students who were abducted in Benue State last week.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the Nigerian Police Spokesperson in a statement on Saturday, said the students were rescued on Friday by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
The students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos were kidnapped along with their medical supervisors while travelling to a meeting.
Shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted the students’ families, demanding a ransom of 50 million naira for their release.
According to BBC Hausa, the rescue operation occurred in Ntunkon Forest, located in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, without paying any ransom.
Sources revealed that three helicopter gunships were deployed during the operation and some of the kidnappers were reportedly arrested, while others were killed during the rescue.
