The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Bauchi State Chapter, has condemned the state government for reportedly spending N67.39 billion on security votes over the past four years.
The opposition party said the staggering amount is particularly shocking considering the state’s combined capital expenditure for education and healthcare during the same period was only N47.79 billion.
WikkiTimes has exclusively reported that Bauchi State government under Governor Bala Mohammed has spent a total of N67.37 billion naira on security votes between 2021 and first quarter of 2024.
The PRP, in a statement issued to newsmen in Bauchi signed by its state secretary, Hon. Abdulazeez Haruna, said such expenditure is unjustified since Bauchi is not having any serious security threat like banditry in the North West.
It said, “We are even more appalled that this is happening in a state that is not plagued by serious security challenges like Boko Haram-ravaged Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa or the banditry-festered Northwestern states of Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina.”
According to the PRP, this alleged mismanagement is unacceptable, especially given Bauchi State’s lack of serious security challenges.
The party demands accountability from the state government, questioning why such a large sum was spent on security votes while critical sectors like education and healthcare remain underfunded.
“This is nothing short of a monumental scandal that is unprecedented in the history of Bauchi State,” said the statement.
“It is unconscionable that while our state struggles with poverty and inadequate infrastructure, public funds are being squandered on questionable security votes with no tangible results.”
The PRP urged Bauchi residents to join it ranks in demanding an end to this practice and emphasized that the people of the State have a right to know how their funds are being used.
