Adamawa Government Orders Closure Of Schools Over Measles Outbreak

The Adamawa State government has ordered the closure of public and private schools following the outbreak of measles in the State.

Public schools are scheduled to resume for the third term 2023/2024 Academic Session, while some private schools are already in session.

A circular signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Aisha M. Umar says ” The resumption date of the third term 2023/2023 Academic Session earlier scheduled to be 6th May 2024 has been posted to next week 13th May 2024 due to outbreak of measles of some in LGAs in the State.

She directed all public and private schools in the state to close down schools accordingly.

According to the Permanent Secretary,
the closure was to mitigate the spread of the disease and to enable the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) to vaccinate the age group of children that are vulnerable.

Wikkitimes had reported how the measles outbreak killed 42 in two local government areas of the state.

Addressing newsmen shortly after the State Executive Council Meeting at the Government House Yola, on Friday, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Chief Felix Tangwami, said that the outbreak affected eight wards in Mubi North and seven wards in Gombi, with a death toll of 42 out of 131 and 177 affected persons, respectively.
