Borno state Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has said that there is no going back in the efforts to close down Bama LGA Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp and ensure safe resettlement of all the occupants.

He said prior to being the camp, the Bama IPD Camp is a girls secondary school, which the community had to forfeit to settle victims of Boko Haram insurgency, assuring locals that very soon the school will come back to its former self.

“I have earlier made a pronouncement that in sha Allah before the end of my tenure, we shall close all the IDPs camps in Borno state. So in fulfillment of these promises, we started resettlements. You have seen Darajaram. We have been to Abbaram and in Sha Allah we hope to close one of the biggest IDPs camps in Borno state, that is Bama IDPs camp”, Zulum said.

According to him, maintaining IDPs camps is no longer sustainable for the government, saying it is a must for them to close the camps and resettle the people according to relevant laws.

“Non-Governmental Organizations have to take note that there is no going back. We must close these IDPs camps and ensure that people are resettled in a safe community in accordance with the Kampala Convention”, he added.

Zulum also appealed for the support of the military to the government’s efforts to ensure safe and sustainable resettlement of the displaced persons, while commending the federal government for its support to the plight of the IDPs.
