Die Zeit, a national weekly newspaper in Hamburg has criticised new British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his attitude to Brexit negotiations, saying that his approach is dividing his country between pro- and anti-Europeans.
The weekly paper made the criticism in an editorial on Thursday.
The paper said in part: “The EU ‘can go whistle,’ Johnson said once. There’s a great temptation to respond with ‘same to you!’
“But the strength of the EU and its bureaucrats has always been that its machinery resolves conflicts with formal procedures and personal disputes with regulations.
“EU negotiators should not give up this strength and instead point out that there is a divorce deal that has already been agreed upon.
“Boris Johnson, who is abusing the EU for his political egoism, will have to answer to the British.
“In the end his people will have to decide whether they want to sacrifice their unity to Johnson’s stubbornness.” (dpa/NAN)
