Eid-el-Kabir: Medical Expert Warns Against Excessive Meat Consumption

Dr Sani Giade of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBTH) in Bauchi has advised Nigerians to limit their meat consumption to reduce the risk of gastroenteritis.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, Giade highlighted the health dangers associated with excessive meat consumption, particularly during celebrations such as Eid-el-Kabir when people often store meat for months.

Giade noted that healthcare facilities frequently report numerous cases of stomach illnesses following the Sallah celebrations, attributing these issues to the high intake of meat, warning that excessive meat consumption could lead to conditions like hyperuricemia and arthritis.

Emphasizing the importance of hygiene, Giade advised that meat should be properly processed, instruments should be kept clean, and preservation methods should be followed diligently.

He also recommended using spices in moderation to prevent health issues. “These precautions are essential for maintaining good health and preventing diseases related to meat consumption,” he added.

The health expert explained that poor handwashing, improper food handling, and lack of sanitation significantly contribute to the spread of diarrheal diseases.

Giade also warned against consuming meat from sick animals, as they might carry infectious diseases that pose serious health risks, citing examples with beef tapeworm infections, bovine tuberculosis, and anthrax, which are zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
