Eight Years After, Displaced Borno Woman Hasn’t Seen Her Husband Taken Away by Soldiers

Hamsatu Gwani had lived peacefully with her husband and their two male children before terrorists attacked and displaced them from their village, Kumshe, Borno State.

Sadly, the military took her husband away for “no reason” and she has not seen him in the past eight years.

She would later learned that her husband is being detained at Giwa Barack, a notorious military detention in insurgency-ravaged Borno.

Describing her husband’s detention as unjust, Hamsatu said all she wants is her husband to be freed by the government.

“I want my husband to be freed,” she said in episode 13 of HumAngle’s podcast centered on displaced persons.

Now living in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, Hamsatu said she sells firewood to sustain herself and her children amid insufficient supports for IDPs in Borno State.

According to her, getting water and access to school for the children has been a major challenge.

Hamsatu is among many victims of counter-insurgency measures in Borno State. Over the years, civilians had suffered repression from insurgents and the military expected to protect them.
