Foundation for Refugees and Economic Empowerment (FREE) an NGO, has distributed clothes to 300 orphans in Adamawa as a gesture of love to celebrate Eid-el-Fitri.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony in Gogo-Gaji Amusement Park, Yola, Dr. Ruqayya Ahmed, member, Board of Trustees of FREE, said the orphans consisted mainly of those who lost their parents following Boko Haram attacks.
Ahmed explained the project was supported and sponsored by Jaiz Bank’s Orphans and Widows Initiative for the North East.
We organised this Eid Fitr get together to celebrate with orphans to to identify with them, show them love and distribute free clothes to them.
“We want to make the orphans feel loved and also let them know that they are not alone,” she said.
She said the organisation was also impacting on society through five different programmes which included water provision, where about 200 boreholes were drilled in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Ahmed also disclosed that the foundation built healthcare facilities in 10 communities where IDPs and orphan’s schools were sited in the three states.
She listed other projects by the NGO to include water and environmental sanitation; as well as widows’ empowerment programmes.
Ahmed said during the just concluded Ramadan fast, the organisation built kitchens across the country where it fed hundreds of thousands of IDP’s.
She, however, said the activities of the foundation were hampered by insufficient funds.
In her remarks, Dr. Dijatu Balla, the Adamawa State chairperson of the organisation, thanked Jaiz Bank for the humanitarian support.
Balla said the orphans were drawn from all parts of the state and urged other well- to-do individuals, groups and organisations to emulate Jaiz Bank.
