Govt. Has Powers to Divide Katsina Emirate – Commissioner

The Katsina State Commissioner of Information, Bala Salisu Zango, has said that the State Government has powers to divide the Katsina Emirate.

Zango was speaking on the query that the Katsina government had earlier issued to the Emir of Katsina Alh. Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, demanding explanation why some district heads abstained from the Eid-el-Kabir Durba celebration in the State.

He said the state government has the power to divide the emirates since chieftaincy matters rest on its shoulders.

“There is no anywhere the Katsina state government mentioned anything about dividing the emirates but this doesn’t mean that the government cannot do so since it has the powers”.

“Chieftaincy matters are for the state governments across the country, and any decision taken by the governor that will make the citizens enjoy he can do so, but the Katsina state government did not say it will disintegrate the emirates in the state”, he added.

He said the Government queried the Emir to explain why some district heads failed to show up despite release of funds for the historic event.

Zango, speaking to BBC Hausa, debunked any rift between the emir and the Governor as the letter was not meant to witch hunt the traditional ruler.

“Our Governor loves traditional festivities such as Sallah Durbar and Katsina state has a long history of cultural heritage. So when Sallah approaches, the governor seeks for insights on how to make the event colorful and receives advice to support the Emirate with funds. Despite this support to the district heads, they failed to show up at the Durbar and that is why the governor sought for answers”, said Zango.

According to him, the government had prior to the event sat down with both the duo of Emirs of Katsina and that of Daura, where all necessary arrangements were made including funding, arguing that the government has every reason to demand for answers.

WikkiTimes reports that there was mixed reaction following a query sent to the Katsina Emir by Governor Radda which implies a cold relationship between the governor and the traditional institutions.
