High Electricity Voltage Razes House in Bauchi

High electricity voltage has burnt one house and destroyed televisions, fans and other electronic devices in Fadaman Jaji, a community behind Old Airport in Bauchi State.

WikkiTimes gathered that the incident occurred after Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) supplied overvoltage power to the area, causing the inferno which razed the house completely.

The Chairman of Old Airport Community Development, Babayo Baifodo disclosed this to reporters during a demonstration at the regional office of JED in Bauchi on Tuesday.

He blamed the incident on the company’s reckless attitude towards addressing minor faults spotted in the power supply chain of the area.

Baifodo said the community was established in 2011, adding it has not enjoyed maintenance of electrical instruments in the area from JED.

“We have contributed money to fix every electric tool that developed fault since the establishment of this settlement. I cannot recall a point in time when JED fixed anything to ensure a steady power supply to us.

“For instance, we raised money coupled with the assistance of some politically exposed individuals to get the current transformer supplying power to us. As the settlement expands, we have to bear with load-shedding,” he said.

The Chairman said the demonstration was to express their grievances physically as a follow-up to numerous letters sent to the company.

Responding, JED Regional Manager, Hafiz Saleh Hassan said that the company has received the community members in good faith as they have the right as customers to protest against poor service delivery.

He, however, argued that the fault might not only lie with JED, adding that residents of the community might be at fault as well through illegal connections.

Commenting about the damage caused, Hassan called on the residents to resolve protective measures to avert future occurrences.
