Hunger, Poor Healthcare kill Wudil Police Cadet

AS Jika, a 100-level cadet at the Nigerian Police Academy Wudil, has died after spending two weeks without food.

Reports indicate that Jika’s health condition deteriorated having gone two weeks starved and malnourished and wasn’t given the desired medical care.

Jika’s colleagues accused the Academy’s Commandant, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Sadiq Abubakar of misappropriating feeding allowance meant for them.

A source who does not want to appear in print said Jika was rushed to the clinic but could not access the healthcare services he direly needed because there were no drugs at the facility, leading to his premature death.

“There was no medical doctor to attend to him,” he added.

He said there is a large number of sick cadet officers visiting the clinic seeking medical service that does exist anywhere in the Academy.

Since the new commandant assumed office, they’ve been providing very bad and inadequate food for us. The boy that died was not up to 20 years old. The boy wouldn’t have died if they’d attended to him. The commandant also ordered the closure of the market and laundry and approved undeserved training exercises during lecture hours.

“Cadets collapse daily here during training due to fatigue, because it’s either they’re starved, malnourished, or both. We’re usually threatened by the commandant and forced to engage in unwarranted training exercises. Also, many cadets have been dismissed on the basis that they fell sick; that’s why many are trying to manage themselves to avoid expulsion from the academy,” he said.

Some staff privy to the financial runnings of the institution said the feeding allowance of cadets is normally diverted into private pockets.
