IDPs: Bauchi SEMA gave us 300 bags of expired rice

The Internally Displaced Persons living in Bauchi State have alleged that the State Emergency Management Agency gave them over 300 bags of expired rice, Punch can report.

The Chairman of the IDPs in Bauchi State, Buba Shehu, who spoke to journalists on the plight of his members on Wednesday at the Bauchi NUJ Secretariat, said they had to destroy the consignment to avoid health hazards.

Shehu also alleged that the 300 bags of rice were supplied by the Presidential Committee on North-East through SEMA but were kept in the store where they expired before they were given to them.

He said, “It is not every time that we get relief materials or supply from the government, but most times, if SEMA and the Presidential Committee on North-East Development receive relief materials, instead of sharing them on time they will keep them in the store for a long time.

“By the time they would share them to us, they are already expired and that was how we wasted 300 bags of rice, we want government to look into this issue.”

The Permanent Secretary, SEMA, Bauchi State, Shehu Ningi, denied the allegations.
