How IRI’s town hall meetings help Bauchi electorates hold leaders accountable

International Republican Institute has commenced town hall meetings in some local government areas of Bauchi state, where elected representatives come face to face with their constituents for a robust interaction on their demands.


The platform enables voters to articulate their needs in terms of social amenities, laws and policies for prompt intervention by the elected leaders.

The meeting which is in its second phase, invites members of the state house of Assembly for engagements with the electorates- an events rarely seen in this part of the world.

CEPPS/IRI has so far held such meetings with thirteen out of thirty two members of the state house of Assembly.

They include Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo, Chiroma Constituency of misau local government, and Babale Abubakar, Dambam Constituency of Dambam local government among other members.

The demands raised by electorates during the meeting includes lack of portable drinking water, poor healthcare services, Inadequate health personnel, poor road network, unqualified teachers as well as dilapidated structures in schools among other things.

At the meeting in Misau, the electorates tasked the member Hon. Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo to ensure the provision of basic social amenities in fulfillment of his campaign promises.

They also called on him to make the necessary consultation with both government and donor agencies in order to meet his obligations.

However, during the meeting at Dambam, the voters challenged the member, Hon. Babale Abubakar not to relent in bringing dividends of democracy to the door steps of his people.

The members took time to reeled out their plans as well as achievements so far recorded.

Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo representing chiroma constituency of Misau local government said, he has enrolled about 100 orphans in schools under his scholarship scheme, purchased submersible borehole equipment Worth over 1 million Naira, refurbished nine boreholes in five communities and secure transformer to some communities among others.

Narrating his own achievements, Hon. Babale Abubakar representing Dambam Constituency said, so far he had placed more than 100 students on ten thousands naira scholarship for three months, refurbished eighty boreholes and purchased two submersible pumps to two government schools in his constituency.
