Jigawa Allocates 6% to Health as Agriculture Gets Lion Share in 2025 Budget

The Jigawa State government is to spend 5.73% of its 2025 budget on the state’s health sector.

Governor Umar Namadi disclosed that N40 billion out of the N698.3 billion budget proposal for 2025 fiscal year is allocated to health sector.

Governor Namadi, said the state is investing over N40 billion on the health sector, including a transformative medical village with a diagnostic and cardiac center.

In a tweet, the Governor said N136 billion will be spent on agriculture while the education sector takes N120 billion.

“Agriculture leads the way with over N136 billion, underscoring its importance to food security, job creation, and economic growth. Education is also a top priority, with N120 billion focused on giving our children the tools to succeed”.

“On Healthcare, we’re investing over N40 billion, including a transformative medical village with a diagnostic and cardiac center”, he tweeted.

WikkiTimes reports that BudgIT reveals that three northwest states of Jigawa, Kebbi, and Zamfara as struggling with inadequate funding and shortage of personnel to cope up with the rising demand for access to health care delivery.

According to the 2023 State of States report, Jigawa allocated N31.22 billion to healthcare, with N19.76 billion spent – 63.3% of the budget. This included major capital projects like the N2 billion completion of the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gumel and N730 million for equipping general hospitals.

Despite these investments, healthcare access remains a challenge, with only 810 facilities serving a population of over 7 million in the state, while one public healthcare facility serves an average of 8,992 people. The report said it is worse off in rural areas.

Governor Namadi said N90.76 billion was allocated for personnel costs to cover the new N70,000 minimum wage while N63.69 will go to recurrent expenses supporting feeding programmes, utilities and scholarships in the 2025 fiscal year.
