Kaduna Carpenter Arraigned for ‘Stealing’ N1.2m Building Materials

James Nuhu, a Kaduna-based carpenter has been arraigned for allegedly stealing building materials worth N1.2 million.

The 37-year-old carpenter, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), was arraigned before Ibrahim Emmanuel of a magistrate court in Kaduna State.

Nuhu is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft, but he denied the allegations.

Chidi Leo, the prosecutor told the court the defendant committed the offence on June 18 at Ungwan Makama, Kamazoa in Kaduna.

Leo claimed the defendant and two others [now at large] stole 10 bags of cement, 2,200 decking woods, roofing planks and iron rods, belonging to one Dennis John, his employer.

The prosecutor added that the defendant also stole two bags of nails and 2,000  blocks, 16 packs of 60 by 60 tiles, 4 drums of paints and 25 bags of broken tiles. According to him, all the items are valued at N1.2 million.

Nuhu’s offences, the prosecutor said contravened sections 285 and 217 of the 2017 Penal Code of Kaduna State.

N500,000 AND TWO SURETIES

The Magistrate, Emmanuel, however, granted the defendant N500,000 bail with two sureties.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means, reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present a three-year tax clearance certificate.

He also said the sureties must be a blood relative of the defendant and must present three recent passport photographs.

The magistrate adjourned the case until November 28 for a hearing
