NGO sensitises students against violence, human trafficking

An NGO, Peace, Health, Environment and Water (PHEW) Foundation, has use the football match it organised for secondary schools in Rivers to create awareness among students on the need for them to work against violence and human trafficking because they were calamitous.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NGO organised a football match between Community Secondary School, Ulakwo and Government Secondary School, Okehi both in Etche Local Government Area for the purpose.

The football competition that took place at Ulakwo on Sunday was tagged, “Catch them Young: Kick-out Violence and Human Traffickers”.

NAN further reports that CSS, Ulakwo defeated GSS, Okehi 7-6 on penalties after the game ended goalless at full time.

Mrs Queen Chigbo, Chairperson of the foundation, told NAN that the aim was to sensitise the youths against involvement in acts of violence and guard themselves against being trafficked during holidays.

Chigbo advised youths to engage themselves in legitimate activities in their daily endeavours so that they could be useful to their families and the nation.

The PHEW chairperson later presented the foundation’s trophy for kick out traffickers and violence to CSS Ulakwo, and cash gifts to both teams.

“Yes, CSS Ulakwo won the game and has been presented the cup, but in the spirit of this event both teams are winners,” she said.

Mrs Blessing Obiekwe, PHEW’s Director of Publicity, admonished the students and youths to avoid being used as thugs during the coming 2019 general elections.

Obiekwe disclosed that the competition would be an annual event which would also involve more youths in years to come.

“The choice of Ulakwo for the maiden programme is aimed at sensitising the teeming youths in the rural areas to be aware and avoid being used for violence and become victims of traffickers,” she said.

Also, Mrs Winifred Edeh, Port Harcourt Coordinator, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), commended PHEW for enlightening the students and youths on human trafficking.

The programme will continue with a peace rally on Dec. 11 and inauguration of PHEW Club on Dec. 14 in the school to continue with the training of students on peaceful coexistence.
