Niger LG polls: Ex chairman optimistic of free, fair process

A former  Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger, Alhaji Ahmed Dogara, says he is optimistic that the State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) will conduct a free, fair and credible Local Government Election in the state on Nov. 30.

Dogara told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Saturday that the task now remained for other stakeholders to play by rules of the polls.

He urged politicians, especially those seeking elective offices, to talk to their supporters to shun thuggery and all other forms of violence to enable the commission to conduct the election in a peaceful  atmosphere.

He said that it was only by so doing that the desire of the commission to conduct a transparent election would be realised.

The former chairman, therefore, urged the commission to put in place all necessary machinery to achieve a hitch-free election on Nov. 30.

“These include ensuring that all required electoral materials are made available at all polling units  to enable rural dwellers to elect leaders of their choice,” he said.

He also appealed to security agencies to checkmate the activities of miscreants ahead of the election by deploying enough personnel to prevent ballot snatching and thuggery.

Dogara said that the measures were necessary to guarantee peaceful atmosphere for voters to exercise their franchise without fear of molestation.

” Security agencies should  demonstrate high sense of professionalism before during and after the elections, ” he said.

He also called on parents  not to allow their children to be used as  political thugs during the polls.
