Plateau Govt to Feed Children, Get Them in Classrooms in Rural Areas

The Plateau State Government has launched a home-grown school feeding initiative to motivate parents to enroll their children in schools in the state.

A news report by the Africa Independent Television (AIT) says that the state government has planned the programme in two schools with a population of about 200 pupils.

The initiative, which seeks to improve pupils’ nutrition in public schools, is expected to be expanded to cover more schools.

Most low-income parents, with current hikes in food prices in the country, struggle to provide meals three times a day to their families, which ultimately exposes children to malnutrition and worsens school enrolment in the state.

Felicia Sylvester, a parent, said the initiative complements her efforts to give a balanced diet to her child who enjoys the programme to stay healthy.

She called on the state government to expand the programme to other schools to be able to cover more children.

WikkiTimes recalls that the Federal Government, in the last eight years, introduced the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, a multi-billion Naira project, targeting pupils in lower primary across the country.
